2027: INEC unveils updated electoral guidelines

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has unveiled updated guidelines ahead of the 2027 general elections.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan presented the updated guidelines to leaders of political parties at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday.

Presenting the regulations, Amupitan assured that the new guidelines would go a long way to ensure a free and fair election come 2027.

He said that the new regulations and guidelines will ensure that the commission is not only legally aligned, but also operationally in sync with the new Electoral Act 2026.

“It is our hope that this updated guidelines will foster a more transparent, fair and equitable electoral landscape for all the stakeholders involved with the election, fixed for the 16th day of January, 2027 and the governorship and the state houses of assembly elections fixed for sixth February, 2027,” the INEC boss said.

“We are putting in a compressed timetable as a result of the reduction in the various timelines in the Electoral Act 2026 which demands what I call a surgical procession.

“Our review has been guided by empirical data, specifically findings from the Political Party Performance Index, PPI. This diagnostic tool highlighted a disturbing gap between party constitutions and grassroots realities.”

He said that the newly drafted regulations encompass crucial areas that are central to the operations of political parties in the country’s democratic framework.
