The management of Ajayi Crowther University (ACU), Oyo, has embarked on the repair of a dangerously corrosive portion on the Oyo -Ogbomoso highway, despite seeking the Oyo State Government intervention.
This was disclosed in a post of the Facebook page of , Mr. Sunday Saanu, obtained by News Contact Online,on Tuesday.
The Vice Chancellor, Ajayi Crowther University, (ACU) in Oyo, Oyo State, Professor Timothy Abiodun Adebayo, explained that his Management decided to carry out palliative work on the bad portion of the federal road in order to avert further disaster around the faith-based university.
The VC said, “This particular portion of the federal road had become a deathtrap for some times now. As ACU Management, we had written to Oyo State Government, seeking state intervention, but since we have not seen any action, we cannot be looking at this dangerous situation without taking precautions.
“We don’t want a situation where people will be saying an accident happens in Oyo-Ogbomoso road in front of Ajayi Crowther University. Our beloved parents all over the country will be apprehensive. We don’t want a situation where parents will be feeling unsafe when coming to see their children”
Prof. Adebayo who was accompanied by his Deputy, Prof. Benjamin Popoola and the Dean, Faculty of Environmental Studies who is also a member of Council, Prof. Yinka Gbotoso, asserted that it was his responsibility to protect the image of the university as well as protect the lives of ACU students.
The VC maintained that there was no amount of money spent to protect lives and property that was too much, pointing out that “the palliative measure is to avert further disaster and to ensure free flow of traffic and I can assure you that it is worth it.
“We know how much this is costing the university. But it is worth it. Apart from safeguarding the image of our university, and protecting the lives of our parents and students, what we have done here can as well pass for our corporate social responsibility with which we are contributing to the betterment of the society.”
The post noted that a portion of the federal road in front of ACU, leading to Ogbomoso from the ancient city of Oyo had become a death trap where trailers and various vehicles regularly fell on account of the gullies which made passing through the road a dangerous adventure.
While noting that seven lives were lost when a trailer fell at the bad portion some weeks back, while the road was temporarily shut for hours
when a tanker which was conveying petroleum fell at this same spot, last Sunday.
It took the intervention of various security agencies, including road safety officials and firefighters to save the situation.
Interestingly, while the palliative work was ongoing, many motorists waited and prayed for the VC for his initiative, saying that ACU has spared them the agony of meandering through the bad portion of the road.
