Alleged IVF fraud: Court grants bail to fertility specialist Abebe

The High Court of the Federal Capital Territory sitting in Jabi, Abuja, has granted bail to Dr. John Abebe of Joje Fertility Centre Limited in a case instituted by the Inspector General of Police.

At the proceedings on March 11, 2026, Justice Fashola presided over the arraignment of Dr. Abebe and Joje Fertility Centre Limited on a three-count charge. Both defendants pleaded not guilty.

Following the plea, counsel to Dr. Abebe, Marvin Omorogbe, moved an application urging the court to grant the first defendant bail on liberal terms. In his ruling, the judge admitted Dr. Abebe to bail.

As of the time of filing this report, Dr. Abebe had met the bail conditions and returned home to his family.

The case stems from a petition reportedly filed by one Hassan Turaki to the Nigeria Police Force, alleging that Dr. Abebe disclosed his wife’s medical report in a correspondence sent to the doctor’s lawyer.

However, the management of Joje Fertility Centre Limited had earlier denied the allegation in a public statement, describing the petition and subsequent charge as a smear campaign intended to tarnish Dr. Abebe’s reputation after more than three decades of medical practice.

The court subsequently adjourned the matter for the prosecution to open its case.
