Yobe police heighten security, urge vigilance ahead of Sallah

The Yobe State Police Command has called for heightened vigilance across the state following the recent bomb explosions in Maiduguri, as security agencies intensify preparations ahead of the forthcoming Sallah celebrations.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent of Police Dungus Abdulkarim, conveyed the command’s sympathy to the government and people of Borno State over the March 16 attacks, which occurred at about 6:30 p.m. at multiple locations within the state capital.

The command urged residents to remain calm but alert, emphasising the need for increased vigilance in public places, communities, and other crowded areas during the festive period.

The advisory followed a State Security Council meeting held at the Government House in Damaturu, where heads of security agencies reviewed the security situation and adopted strategies to prevent any breach of peace before, during, and after the celebrations.

According to the statement, the Commissioner of Police, Emmanuel Ado, has directed Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and other tactical and intelligence units to ensure adequate deployment to worship centres, recreational facilities, parks, and other critical locations across the state.

Residents were also encouraged to support security efforts by promptly reporting suspicious movements, objects, or individuals to the nearest police station.

The command cautioned motorists against reckless driving, noting that road safety remains a key component of public safety during the festivities.

It further warned against the use or display of dangerous weapons during celebrations, a trend observed in previous festive periods, stressing that offenders would be dealt with in accordance with the law.

Communities were also advised to strengthen local vigilance structures, including neighbourhood watch groups, as part of efforts to enhance collective security.

“Security is a shared responsibility. If you see something, say something,” the statement added.
