The newly elected Chairman of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun State Council, Comrade Yetunde Fatungase, has pledged to provide fair, transparent and inclusive leadership for members of the Chapel.
Fatungase, a Senior Editor with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), made the pledge in her acceptance speech delivered on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, after her inauguration as chairman of the Chapel.
She said she was deeply honoured by the confidence reposed in her by members, stressing that leadership was not about occupying a position but serving those who entrusted her with the responsibility.
According to her, “I pledge to lead with fairness, transparency, humility and respect for every member, regardless of position, seniority or personal differences.”
The new chairman acknowledged that the Chapel, like every human organisation, had its challenges, noting that some members might feel aggrieved, unheard or dissatisfied with certain aspects of the association’s affairs.
She assured members that genuine concerns would not be dismissed or treated with contempt, promising to create constructive avenues for members to express their grievances, be heard and seek appropriate resolution.
Fatungase urged members to embrace dialogue and understanding, saying disagreements should not be allowed to degenerate into bitterness, personal attacks or division.
“We may not always agree on every issue, but we can disagree without bitterness, personal attacks or division. Our differences should challenge us to improve the association rather than tear it apart,” she said.
She further promised that her administration would promote open communication, listen to members and carry them along in decisions affecting the association.
The chairman also called for the courage to acknowledge and correct mistakes whenever identified, while urging members to clarify misunderstandings and seek common ground whenever differences arise.
According to her, the strength of the Correspondents’ Chapel lies not only in its leadership but in the collective commitment of all its members.
She therefore appealed for members’ support, cooperation and constructive criticism as her administration begins its tenure.
Fatungase also extended what she described as an “open hand” to members who might have reservations about the new administration, assuring them that there was room for everyone to contribute to the growth of the association.
“There is room for everyone at the table, and together, through mutual respect and genuine dialogue, we can move this association forward,” she said.
She urged members to put aside bitterness and suspicion and concentrate on the values that brought journalists together, including professionalism, integrity, truth and service to society.
