A Medical expert and Head of Occupational Health and Safety unit, Ogun State Ministry of Health, Dr. Festus Adetomiwa, has advised civil servants to cultivate the habit of regular exercise for total well being.
Adetomiwa at a sensitisation programme for workers in the State Ministry of Works and Infrastructure to commemorate World Health and Safety Day with the theme “Safety and Healthy Working Environment: A Fundamental Human Right”, noted that sitting on a spot for a long time can be detrimental to workers’ health.
He noted that public and civil servants should be conscious of the sedimentary aspect involved in the process of carrying out their official duties, adding that the sensitisation would go a long way to raise workers’ awareness on healthy lifestyles, towards preventing diseases and maintaining the highest degree of physical, mental and social well-being.
The medical doctor pointed out that early diagnosis could help prevent health challenges like cancer, hypertension, diabetes, among others, urging the staffers of the agency to engage in regular medical check-ups like blood pressure, glucose check, urinalysis and blood assessment and exercise for effective service delivery.
In her remarks, the Director of Administration and Supplies in the Ministry, Mrs. Oladunni Adetona, commended the Ministry of Health for the initiative, adding that the programme would spur workers to pay more attention to their health and well-being for improved performance.
Adetona assured that the management would continue to interact with the staffers while encouraging them on the need for regular medical check-ups.
