Operatives of the Ilaro Division of the Ogun State Police Command have arrested a suspect, Adewale Ogoemi Arojah, for allegedly impersonating a renowned prophet on Facebook and defrauding multiple victims of more than ₦18 million under the guise of offering prayers and spiritual assistance.

The suspect was arrested following a complaint lodged on October 3, 2026, by Muyiwa Akogun, popularly known on Facebook as “Prophet Dr. Muyiwa Akogun,” who alerted the police to fraudulent activities allegedly being perpetrated in his name through a duplicated Facebook profile.

According to a statement issued by the Ogun State Police Command Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, and obtained by News Contact Online, the Divisional Police Officer, Ilaro Division, upon receiving the complaint, immediately deployed intelligence and detective operatives to track down the alleged impersonator.

Babaseyi said sustained technological monitoring and intelligence-led analysis led operatives to a nearby village in Ajegunle, via the Ilaro/Ibogun axis, where the suspect was successfully apprehended.

He stated that during interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed to impersonating Prophet Akogun on Facebook and using the cleric’s identity to deliver fake prophecies and offer prayer services to vulnerable individuals.

The police spokesperson added that the victims allegedly defrauded by the suspect were based both in Nigeria and abroad.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect systematically targeted victims seeking spiritual assistance on the said prophet’s Facebook page, gained their trust and allegedly swindled them of funds amounting to over ₦18 million,” Babaseyi stated.

The suspect has since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Eleweran, Abeokuta, for further investigation to determine the full extent of the alleged crime, identify possible accomplices and facilitate prosecution.

Babaseyi said the arrest underscored the Ogun State Police Command’s determination to dismantle online fraud networks, curb identity theft and prevent cybercriminals from operating freely across the state.

The Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, CP Bode Ojajuni, psc, FCSS, MNIPR, commended the Ilaro operatives for their vigilance, tactical discipline and swift response.

The CP, according to Babaseyi, reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to protecting residents from both digital and physical threats.

The Command also advised members of the public to exercise caution and due diligence when engaging with religious leaders and other public figures on social media platforms.

It urged citizens to verify the authenticity of social media accounts before engaging in transactions and refrain from transferring money to unverified individuals in exchange for spiritual remedies or promises.
